Basic Principle of The Common Vein

The Whole is  Bigger than the Parts

When 1 Unit combines with another unit in a given environment , a new unit results, often bigger and more powerful than the individual parts.

1 +1 = 1 Applied to Sculptures

The sculpture is made of individual parts.  The result after the parts are connected, creates a new product

Take “Wizened” below for example, consisting basically of 2 parts; the body consists of a piece of driftwood (Courtesy Chris Baker) and the  head a piece of tree trunk – possibly a burl, found in the street –

Either of them by itself is really only a piece of wood – but together they create a story, project the body of an old lady.

The natural grain of the wood forming her chest and abdomen, has a round structure on her chest,  reminiscent of a aging breast and a nipple, and the chubby cheeks of the face, with the edentulous smile, reminiscent of the face of an old lady

So in this sculpture,  the equation 1 + 1 =  1   is exemplified and depending on the viewer – it is thumbs up, thumbs down or somewhere in between.

Wizened

The 2 parts of “Wizened” create a sculpture, but they have to be balanced and secured on a stable base in order for them to be valued and appreciated by the viewer.  So there is now a third component to this sculpture, which is the base and the bond that connects the base to the sculpture

The equation is now 1 + 1 + 1 = 1

Many structures, including biological structures, and artistic renderings  consist of many parts.  For example, in the liver,  there are 7 billion cells, which is as many people as there are on the earth. The equation for this structure is going to be 1 +1, 3.5 billion times  which will result in 1 new miraculous unit – the liver When there is health , it is thumbs up, and when there is  disease,  it is thumbs down, and sometimes it is in between.

The Common Vein – Painting and Drawing

Painting and drawing has similar principles

Painting requires many brushstrokes with varying  color, size, shape and form and the result is a new art piece

The Painting
In fine art all the brush strokes need to bond in structure and function to create a unique art piece that strives to unique presentation of oneness.

There is occasion when an art piece makes you stand in awe at the miracle of the genius artist who has give the world a glimpse of wholeness.

The idea to promote the Common Vein principles for art, sculpture and painting, is to provide an understanding and a perspective that the approach to art and sculpture is the same approach to medicine biology, dance, music and nature and in fact all human endeavours.  The same principles recur again and again

ie The parts that make the whole…the bonds that bring the parts together to make the whole….the whole  that has a new energy but also a new yearning for wholeness, which it usually cannot achieve fully, since there remains a new horizon for another oneness.
