LET NOT WINNING BE YOUR AIM, IT ALSO MATTERS HOW YOU CAN DRINK AFTER THE GAME! OR HERZLIA 1969.

Much has been said about our recent trip to our Sister School, both for the good and bad. The proof of the success of the tour, one would think can be found in the actual facts, i.e., the results of the matches played. However I feel that the overall success and enthusiastic spirit of the tour was not only secured by the sports results, and so let me briefly take a look at the, let?s call it ?social? aspects of the tour.

One is always ready to enjoy a train trip, but when there are eighty of you (with the same things in mind); it?s enough to provoke even the non-sports participants. Under the baton of Miss Shirley McCarthy things were rather subdued, especially after the first night, when the boys found themselves separated from the girls by the locked door between the two coaches. However boys will be boys and Jacques Muskat is not only good at ?derailing trains? (unquote) but also at picking train locks.

Wednesday, I?m sure all will agree, was very boring and quiet, until we reached De Aar at about 5 o?clock where we took over the whole town from the shoe shop to the public bar. Once back on the train we found ourselves preparing for our early arrival on Thursday morning.

And so to the ? Hevenu Shalom Alechem?, we roared into Cape Town Station to be greeted wildly by our enthusiastic hosts ( mainly because they were missing school!). An anticipated scene of absolute chaos followed where slowly but surely, everyone was given a home, with some being unfortunate enough to ? jump out of the frying pan into the fire?; ( I refer to Doos Levy who came from one hostel and promptly went to another). A quick bath and brush up and we were at school at about 1.00 to see our first Herzlia assembly. At one stage I thought we were the assembly and we were the visitors, after we officially let them know of our arrival. Anyhow there was the Elephant ( Brian Walt, for those who are a bit slow) trying to conduct an assembly and welcoming us at the same time. Thereafter, the first of the sports was played and one found it quite fascinating the efficiency of the Cape Town bus service, which was transported us to the field.

Thursday night was spent in the school hall, where at the official welcome the BIG BOYS and the BIG MEN  made speeches about ? cementing good relations between the two schools?. Well let me say at this point that   that this has been achieved so much so, that we are running out of cement. You ask Harold Janks, he?ll tell you ? boy did he have apiece of cement! No wonder she was so well built.

Friday morning we were taken on tours ? or should I say we were taken to the places, but decided for ourselves where to do the touring. Our programme was a very exciting one, with that old, famous castle being the highlight ? you can just imagine the guide cracking the same jokes you heard five years ago.

It had been advertised that on Friday evening the pupils of King David and Herzlia would  be taking over the Schoender Street Shul. This we duly did and we conducted our own service. Mind you, if Dave Balkin hadn?t whispered and Bobby Heillbrunn hadn?t lost his voice you might have called it Mincha and Ma?ariv. Nevertheless the Jo?burgers were there and this in its self attracted many people. I cannot say the same thought for Saturday morning, where we struggled for a minyan.

Saturday night was the first of our two parties. It is a bit difficult though, when at 7 o?clock on Saturday you are still trying to get hold of a discotheque for your party, but finally we managed to get it, and the party was thoroughly enjoyed by all ( even more say, by some who thought that the victory in the sports should be celebrated accordingly !)

Sunday morning?s tour was scheduled to start at 9.30.  Well at about 11 o?clock after everyone had got over the repercussions of ?the morning after the night before?, we left in two busses for a tour of the Cape Peninsular.

After almost clinching the trophy on Sunday night after the debating and chess, and winning the soccer and tennis on Monday morning, we were given our first afternoon free and some time to ourselves.

Monday night was our farewell party and what a farewell! ) especially when you are sitting at the door collecting money and some nice big guys request immediate unauthorized entry ? the rest I leave to your imagination!!)

As per usual everyone was in high spirits!!!!!!! Justifiably of course ? after all we had just won the trophy, hadn?t we, Solly and Co?  Well eventually the party did end and Tuesday morning one by one, we rolled up to Cape Town Station half asleep. Courts cases, investigations, tribunals, etc. , were then held as to what happened the night before. After many formalities had been overcome we at last puffed out of cape Town Station with flags fluttering, hands waving, tears dripping, and blast but not least, kisses blowing.

Our trip back was perhaps less eventful than the one down, but most felt a bit despondent about leaving some kind of acquaintance in the Cape and the excitement began to die down. And so, on Thursday at 5 o?clock, we arrived and with the traditional Baruchem Halaim, we were back in the bustling metropolis.

Looking back ? a great tour to remember, perhaps made even greater by our 4 teachers, Mrs. Amiel, Miss McCarthy, Mr. Kleynhans and Mr. Johnson ( Barnacles Bill, the sailor)  A word of thanks also to Jeff Miller and his First Aid team, for all the bandaging and plastering and ??. Well other things they did to help make the tour a success. And last but far from least, we thank our Herzlia hosts for their warm hospitality and friendship ( real Cape Town   style) that they showed towards us, both on and off the field, and we look forward to welcoming them up here next year.

Rugby Team gets Drunk 1969
(Tevis Shapiro)
I recall an incident on the tour to Herzlia in 69. Jeff Miller was the first aid man for the Rugby team but forgot to empty the Vodka from his water bottle from the train trip down so you can imagine what happened when the first drink of water was needed! Team, as I recall, was Paul Paster, Ralph Judah, willie Brouze, Harold Janks, Les Ossip,Eric Stillerman, Manfred Levy, Barry Judelman, bobby Heilbrunn, Hilton Cohen, Raymond Friedman Brain Davidoff, Errol Price, Yours truly and Neil Milner. Uncle Norman was not impressed. Wonder where most of them are.
