Anael Harpaz grew up in South Africa during Apartheid. Her father, an ardent Zionist born in Palestine in 1927, frequently spoke of returning home. At 15, Anael visited Israel and took part in an ulpan program run by the Jewish day school she attended. She was caught up in the atmosphere of triumph and pride and determined to return to Israel to become a soldier. After finishing high school she and her family moved to Israel. She learned Hebrew, studied to be a kindergarten teacher, served in the army, and married a pilot in the Israeli air force. (I have three gorgeous copper haired children and am now divorced)

Anael raised three wonderful children. The death of her fourth infant sparked a long spiritual journey that continues to this day. In the early 1990s, during the first Intifada in the Palestinian town of Nablus, she encountered the suffering of the ?other? for the first time. It has taken years of spiritual seeking, studying many healing modalities, and becoming a spiritual healer before she found her life?s work at Creativity for Peace, where she facilitates compassionate dialogue and directs the organization?s Middle East program, along with Silvia Margia. She is part of two Arab/Jewish women?s groups, Beyond Words and Woman of Vision, and participates in many interfaith gatherings. Anael is a poet and has written a manuscript entitled Pieces to Peace.

Summer Camp 2009

from an email September 2009

Hi to you all,   I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family  a Happy New Year and Gmar Hatima Tova   May this year be one of  health and happiness, serenity and success, creativity and peace.

This summer?s camp was as powerful and challenging as ever. We brought the largest group we have ever hosted in a single session ? 20 girls ? who came with pain as well as hope for peace. Because of the war in Gaza they were understandably angry and grief-stricken. There were many dialogues filled with heated arguments on both sides. In the end, these strong young women realized the value of speaking from the heart and listening without judgment.

?This experience left a mark on my personality that I won?t forget and changed my point of view on everything,? one camper said.

?I learned how to accept other?s opinions. I was exposed to a big part about the life of the people who I was afraid of. This changed me and I hope we will change future generations,? said another girl.

We also had a lot of fun. Rather than tell you in words, please enjoy the following photos from this summer?s camp.
