Okay, here goes. I married Charles the year I did my higher diploma of Education at UCT in l976.I qualified as a high school English and Hebrew teacher, he as a Phd. marine biologist. We went travelling?. Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Curacao, Costa Rica, El Salvador, where we got stuck waiting for my US visa in the middle of a civil war with real guns, real deaths, real poverty, real terror?then La Paz in Mexico, and finally made it to the US where we lived and worked till Charles got a job in Cape Town, the year before Daniel was born. I taught at high schools, then Daniel came along, then a horrible split, involving my ex?s student, who is now his second wife with two more kids, then followed Charles to Hawaii to get divorced
.I worked at a shelter for abused teenagers for four and a half years in Oahu, before the stress got to me and I returned to my flat in Seapoint. I was able to stay home in CT while Daniel went to school, and then without any more financial support on a regular basis, had to start working again. I au paired, babysat, taught, whatever would pay the bills, and that?s what I still do. My life in a nutshell.
Love Colette
I was named Colette Solica Hatchuel after Solica Hatchuel who grew up (to the age of 14) in culturally mixed Morocca. A Moslem shah wanted to marry her and she refused because she was Jewish, and she was dragged through the streets of Fez and beheaded by the man who loved her so much. He felt bad afterwards though, and put up a shrine in her honour in the Jewish cemetery in Morocco, and both Moslems and Jews go to visit her grave.
Bessie Taurog teased me in front of the grade 2 class for this name, and every one laughed when she mispronounced it. From then on, I would never acknowledge this second name at school.
I made friends with a Moslem guitarist at varsity, and he was suffocated by homeless people he took in to his home. The interesting thing is that he had a son born on my birthday and a daughter born on my brother?s birthday. My brother has a daughter who carries the same family name of Solica.
What do you make of all this.? Colette

November 2009
My plan is to revamp my bathroom and rent out my flat, so that I won?t need to teach for much longer? I have been teaching English, Hebrew, Spanish and French like a hamster on a treadmill, and hope my plan to rent out my flat and become a gypsy again succeeds ?.. I won?t be near a computer for a while, but I just want to say that I really enjoy opening up facebook and ?seeing? and ?hearing? you all again.
Have a lovely day in Canada, United states, Jo?burg etc.
