I joined Old Mutual as an actuarial trainee in 1974 and qualified as an actuary in 1980. From 1987 to 1992 I was Senior Regional Manager ? Employee Benefits for Old Mutual in Johannesburg, during which period I was the Senior Actuarial Consultant and Valuator to a large number of Funds. I was then moved to Cape Town as Unit Trust Manager in 1993 and was appointed Managing Director of Old Mutual Unit Trusts in 1994. In 1998 I was appointed General Manager of Old Mutual and was responsible for all of the Old Mutual Group?s African Operations other than SA and Zimbabwe. In July 2001, I moved to Old Mutual Actuaries and Consultants as Executive Consultant and Actuary, the position I still hold.
I was admitted as a Fellow of ILPA in 1984 and served on the Council of the Financial Planning Institute from 1993 until 2004, holding the office of President for 2002-2004. I was also appointed a Director of the international Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB) in 2006, and served as its Chair in 2008.
I also serve on the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) Retirement Matters and Professional Conduct Committees.
I am now based in Cape Town, am married to Peta, and have 3 daughters. The eldest, Andy, aged 25, married Warren Kopelowitz in July 2008, and now lives in Johannesburg. The others are Toni, aged 22, and Kim, aged 20, both studying full time at UCT.
I play Masters? League Squash in Cape Town, and play a bit of golf if I get a chance, enjoy the outdoors, with my favourite place for a break being the Kruger National Park!
