Definition
A transient ischemic attack (TIA), is sudden loss of reversible brain function for less than 24 hours due to embolism or vascular thrombosis resulting in ischemia and not infarction. It is part of a spectrum of ischemic disorders of the brain.
The cause for the event is usually an embolic event, atheroscclerosis, dissection, or an arteritis.
The structural findings may include an embolus, a partially occluded thrombosed or dissectedcted vessel a or a feeding vessel with a high grade stenosis.
