Mr Allenby

Mr Allenby

A kind and gentle guy.  Taught us Arithmetic ()

In 1982 I went back to JHB for 5 days.  Whilst I was there an uncle of mine died. He had requested that when he dies he wants to be cremated as he didn?t think he would get 6 friends to come and carry the coffin.

The man who officiated at Temple Israel was Mr Allanby our primary school teacher.

After the service I went up to him, said I did not think he would remember me, he didn?t, but told him I lived in Toronto.  He mentioned he had a very good friend living there who I actually knew. A few months later I met with his friend who mentioned in a letter that he had recently met THIS MIDDLE AGED MAN. That was me. 27 years ago. Shit man I was 29 and he called me a middle aged man.

But he was a sweet and gentle teacher from what I remember. (Selesnick)

 Dr   Beron

Dr Beron

Principal ? Usually kind and thoughtful about kids ? PhD in Psychology I think ? it showed. (Sharp)

  Mr Booysens

Mr Booysens

David Lowenstein, Frank Levenstein and I had extra Afrikaans lessons with Booysen at David?s house in club street in Std

  5.  We found him pretty decent. (Sharp)

I think he was a spy and had his eye on Ralph Judah (Davidoff)

  Mr Davis

Mr Davis

Was the groundsman in Primary school in the late fifties ()

  Mrs Falke

Mrs Falk was Cynthia Fogel?s grandmother.  Cynthia was my neighbour and her gran lived with her.  She was always

sweet to us in the neighbourhood but had a reputation for being quite strict in class. (Sharp)

  Mrs Furman

I remember Geoff?s mom, Mrs Furman, as a very strict primary school teacher who kept us on our toes! (Miller)

Mrs Furman taught me in Form 3.  She was sweet and patient.  When my dad would show up at the door with my

arithmetic book, left at home several times, she would wring her hands and resignedly say ?oh Samuel? (Sharp)

  Mrs Goodman

Mrs Goodman

Wore sandals and stockings together in the middle of summer (Davidoff)

old the story of the tortoise and hare on the first day of grade 1 in the old double story house that was subsequently

knocked down to build the nursery school.  God bless Mrs. Goodman! ? The story remains true? (Davidoff)

  Mrs Infeld

Mrs Infeld

She would conduct the Shemaa every morning from the steps outside the Standard 4 classrooms looking out to the

playground where we were all assembled.  She would move her hand up and down, palm outwards, as if we needed help

  with the timing. (Sharp)

4 foot and a penny high and the same distance wide with a rotund face, strawberry blond hair, high heel shoes and round

gold rimmed glasses ?Ul you or ont you shut up! (Davidoff)

  Mr Jansen

Mr Jansen

Apparently the Class of 68 spent a lot of time debating Jannie Jansen? I haven?t heard much from our guys on this ?

except from Jeff ? he escaped from Witpoortjie unscathed!Glad to say I also escaped unscathed! Don?t know anyone who

actually fell victim to him. I do remember the Wipoortjie outing ? quite spooky with Ghost stories, fufi slides, mountain

climbing and parfaits at the nearby roadhouse! (Stillerman)

Who survived Witpoortie untouched by the bunnie????

  Me for one. (Miller)

  Mrs Medugno

Mrs Medugno

  Elegant cropped gray hair (Davidoff)

She was a cousin of my mom?s.  Her father and my grandmother were cousins.  Very interesting woman if only I could

  remember why!

Peggy married and divorced an Italian hence the name (Hellman)

  Mr Myers

Mr Barney Myers

  A lovely guy.

He would look out of the corner of his eye because he turned his head 45degrees. (Sharp)

In Standard 2, my cousin Rodney Goldberg, a brilliant batsmen who went on to play for KES at their peak and some

representative cricket, was given out LBW at Norwood school, a decision he was not happy about.  He remonstrated and

was scolded by Mr Myers for bad sportsmanship.  His dad Roy was on the side of the field and had to calm Rod down.

Twenty five years later, Barney saw Roy in town in Jo?burg, crossed the street to greet him, saying, ?Roy, the kid was not

  out that day?. (Sharp)

Kind and gentle ? a mensch (Davidoff)

  Mr Stodel

One more name came to mind after thinking about Butch. The anti Butch was Charles Stodel. Jeff you must have worked

backstage for one of his productions? I learned a lot about ?la caje feigel? from that guy. (Leveen)
