Anterior Commissure

Structure

The anterior commissure is a bundle of axons that connect the hemispheres in one location across the middle of the brain. It is closely associated with the corpus callosum.

Function

It connects the temporal lobes and also crossed olfactory fibers. It works in conjunction with the corpus callosum in intra-hemispheric communication.

Disease

Disease in the anterior commissure impairs olfactory and auditory intra-hemispheric transfer

Diagnosis

MRI other neuroimaging techniques are used for diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment of anterior commissure dysfunction consists of surgery and radiation.

Posterior Commissure

Structure

The posterior commissure is a rounded band of axons crossing the cerebral aqueduct.

Function

The posterior commissure is responsible for controlling the pupillary response to light.

Disease

Disease results in abnormal pupillary response.  It is also been found to have abnormalities in Parkinson?s disease and Niemann-Pick disease.

Diagnosis

It is usually observed through MRI.

Treatment

Treatments for the alleviation of symptoms and discomfort are medicinal and surgical.
